Social Distance Sports
Who knew how much enjoyment
running or biking could bring in a time of self-isolation? I’ve always liked to
do both but now the longer it takes the better it is even though it’s hard to
find the time to fit it in my busy schedule. What with sleeping, eating,
cleaning and binge watching there’s hardly any time left. It is an absolute joy
to see someone else from the club out there that I can say hello to while
maintaining my distance.
However, I find running or
biking during these times has some challenges. Whenever one approaches someone
else, a decision needs to be made with regards to how to “keep your distance.”
It is difficult to do this when there is a large group together that are
maintaining their distance from each other but leave you no place to go to
maintain yours. Then there are the bikers that don’t seem to realize that they are allowed to move out of their proper lane to help keep a
safe distance. Why don’t they move over? Is there an invisible wall that I
can’t see? And what about those people so absorbed in their phones with their heads
down that they don’t even know you are coming and therefore make no effort to
move over even when they are walking in the middle of the lane. In addition,
there are those that you are trying to pass but when you try to let them know
you are approaching you realize that they have their earphones on and don’t
hear a thing. What’s a gal to do?
I’m trying to be as
accommodating to others as possible even though sometimes it seems to be a
constant zigzag pattern across the trail. It’s not as much fun to run/bike most
of your miles alone but I am thankful that our wonderful paths in Santa Clarita
remain open for all of us to use. Please be considerate of all the others out
there and do what you can to maintain your distance. Keep on running and I hope
to cross paths with many of you over the next couple of weeks while we
hopefully ease ourselves out of this.
As always, we encourage you to submit articles as well
as photos and your survival running tips!
Enjoy this edition of the SCRambler and if you have
any comments or suggestions please forward them to me as well!
I miss you all, but this too shall pass! Stay safe and see you soon.

ORIENTEERING CHALLENGE-New
Race Series event
DISTANCE MATTERS COVID
Dash-New Race Series event
Orienteering challenge
details:
The Club has organized an
orienteering challenge for the month of May. In order to participate you need
to download the map and instruction sheet from the website (under Our Events),
plot your route around the checkpoints and run/walk around and collect all of the unique punch patterns on your score card.
Once you have completed
your sheet just submit it along with a screen shot of your GPS (if you have it)
to Street-O@scrunners.org. This is a
club fun event worth 3 points. There will be awards for the fastest time,
shortest distance covered, as well as a random drawing from all completed
submissions.
The webpage with map and
instructions will be live and checkpoints will be in place from May 1st to
May 31st .
You can complete the Street-O
as a solo run/walk or with family/friends from the same household. If you have
any questions, please send them to street-o@scrunners.org
We advise wearing a glove when using each punch and wash your
hands when you’re finished.
Distance Matters COVID Dash details:
This is a FUN Race Series
Event with a little competition to help keep us motivated, maybe push us to run
a little harder and, possibly, an opportunity to meet new SCR’s. Here’s how it
works:
Each member that wants to
participate will submit a recent 5K time. Based on times submitted, teams will
be selected, 3-5 per team, depending on numbers, and each team will choose a
Captain and come up with a fun, creative team name. Every Monday an email will
be sent to all team members with a specific run to complete that week; the week
will run from Monday to Sunday. Runners will report their results to their team
Captains and the Captains will then email the overall results, either total
time or total distance to Sue & Carolyn.
EX: “RUN for 25 minutes”. Each team member will report their distance
covered for the 25 min. run to their Captain, who will then add up the total
distance of all team members and report the total only, by the end of the week,
Sunday. (Alternatively, if that week’s run is to run a specific distance, the
time to cover that distance will be reported).
Each week we will send out
updated team results and members of the leading team will earn 1 Race Series
point. The team with the overall highest rank at the end of the event will earn
3 Race Series points for each member. Each member to submit their own points on
SCR website.
TIMELINE:
5K Time Submission: Friday,
May 8, 8pm
Weekly Times to Submit: each
Sunday by 10pm
Captain of each time email
overall team results to:
Carolyn Gordon: cc2gordon@att.net AND Sue
Davis: suedavis4155@gmail.com
Length of Event: 7 weeks.
Starting week of May 11th, ending week of June 22nd (last day to run and submit
info Sunday, June 28th).
Let’s have some FUN
SCR’s!!
by Kelley Schranz
About the end of January, I was running with
Melanie and she mentioned that Leap Day, February 29, fell on a SATURDAY this
year, so OF COURSE, that meant that we should have some sort of a fun run that
day. Runners’ mentality, and it made total sense to me. Clever as she is, Mel
came up with the idea of running 29 laps on the 29th of February — but what
could we do with this idea? We didn’t know, but I told her I’d be glad to help.
At a Starbuck’s Saturday, a local man, Ethan
Marquez, showed up looking for LA Marathon runners to hang out with. With him
was his son, Peyton, an 8th grader at Arroyo Seco
Junior High who is battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Ethan left Peyton (who
is in a wheelchair) outside with the runners while he went in to order. Melanie
began talking to Peyton and was smitten by his outgoing personality. She wanted
to do something to help. After talking to Peyton’s dad, Melanie learned of
Peyton’s Project, a non-profit founded by Peyton’s folks, Ethan and
Bonnie.
So, the idea of the fun Leap Day run and
learning of Peyton’s Project got together, and Leap-A-Thon was born! Carl
Pantoja and I were on board right away with the idea, and the planning began.
OK, $29 to run 29 laps on the 29th of February.
Great! But how do we get the word out? This is not a regular race with chip
timing and awards at the end. This is a fundraiser — and it has
to appeal to a broad range of people, not just runners — and it has to
be fun. We had several planning meetings, most at the Sheriff Station where
Ethan is a Deputy, each week summarizing what we’d done and brainstorming new
ideas. Flyers were distributed throughout the community and to the entire Hart
School District. Several merchants generously supported us with gift cards and
products for a raffle, and with food for the Leapers. A local radio station
host offered to come and announce the event. Things were moving along nicely,
but still we were in uncharted territory and were unsure of how the day would
unfold. Would most people just run (or most likely walk) a few laps, have some
food and leave? Would people be arriving at all different times between 2:00
and 4:00? Would people be stopping in between laps to rest and eat before
starting again? We just didn’t know.
Fast forward to February 29. SUCCESS!!! In every
way, success! God blessed us with a gorgeous afternoon, the announcer and DJ
were fantastic, and 95% of the participants started together, with Peyton in
his chair leading the first lap. People were cheering on the runners and
walkers, dancing to the music, and just plain having a great time. No clock
equaled fun! Some ran, some walked, Peyton “rolled,” some ran a few and walked
a few. There were all kinds of combinations. And nobody said that you had to
finish all 29!
But people really kept at it. Hardly anybody
stopped to eat, instead staying out on the track and completing laps. As people
finished, they stayed and listened to the music and cheered on those still
running. The last person completing her final lap was joined by Peyton and a
large group of people, and celebration erupted when they all crossed the finish
line. There were raffle prizes and lots of pictures of smiling faces — and the
Leap-A-Thon was over. What a fun afternoon for everyone.
Thanks to all of you SCRs who came out and
supported the Leap-A-Thon and Peyton’s Project. This was a new event that we
took a chance on, and your participation really helped made it a success. It
was fun to get to know the Marquez family, and a real pleasure to meet Peyton —
what an inspirational young man he is. And Melanie and Carl, we worked so well
together. I look forward to our next adventure.
And Peyton’s family joined the SCR Saturday
evening.

The First Woman to Run the Boston Marathon
By Elizabeth Conzevoy
While many of you were
supposed to run the Boston Marathon this last month and with woman’s history
month last March, and Mother’s Day this month, I thought it fitting to write a
short article on Bobbi Gibb, or Roberta Louise “Bobbi” Gibb born in 1942. In
1966, Bobbi had applied to run the Boston Marathon and received a letter
informing her that woman were “not physiologically
able to run a marathon.” Are you kidding
me? When I read this and think of all
the wonderful woman and friendships, I have made over the years because of my
long-distance running, I decided immediately that I needed to write a short
article about this amazing woman.
She hid in bushes at the
start of the 1966 Bostin race dressed in a black bathing suit and some baggy
boy’s clothes. After the race started,
she was able to sneak into the pack at the start. However, after a few miles the spectators
realized she was a woman and began cheering her on. She admitted later she was worried she was
going to get thrown out or arrested. She was applauded by many during the race and
the headlines the next day. For the next few years she competed unofficially in
the Boston Marathon. It wasn’t until 1972
that women were officially allowed to run a marathon! Yikes.
Anyway, back to even more amazing
parts about this woman. She is described
as: mother, scientific researcher
for neurodegenerative diseases, attorney in intellectual property law, marathon
athlete, author of three books, accomplished sculptor and painter, and global speaker. Wow!! I
thought this woman was well deserving of giving honors in March, April, and May
this year!
If you want to find out more
about this amazing woman check out her Bobbi Gibb Marathon Sculpture Project

Race Series 2020-new updates!
By Carolyn Gordon
So…things have been a little different
lately….including how and where we run, train, race and socialize as a club. I
hope everyone is healthy and adjusting to this while still being able to get
out for a few runs each week. The Board has been working to add a few extra fun
events to keep us moving and able to earn Race Series Points so be sure to
check-out the new additions and have fun participating!
If you haven’t done so,
remember to submit any points on the SCR website:
http://www.scrunners.org/. Choose “Our Events” and “Our Race Series” to see the rules.
Scroll to the bottom of the rules to find the link to then enter your Race Series Points.
There are a couple of
different ways to earn prizes, etc. from previous years so give the rules a
quick look over, as well as an updated list of events (see below), and, read in
the SCRambler details for the new events added.
Please feel free to reach out
with any questions! See you on the road or the water stop, social distancing,
of course!
